Notes for biography | Audrey, the youngest member of the family, was always fond of animals and babies, so it was not surprising that she married a farmer - Stan McFee. Even as a young child she loved cats and other animals and would spend a great deal of time down at a neighbour's home - Mrs. Crutch - where they had cows, chooks, ducks and dogs as well as numerous small children. They had a dairy where they separated the milk and made butter. Audrey did not take school very seriously - only when she had to bring home her report to show dad. She later used to say she felt like crawling under the table! After Primary and High School she became apprenticed to a very good dressmaker — Ellie Sadler - and later worked as a cutter for the well known firm of Lucas's in Ballarat. She is still an excellent dressmaker. After her marriage to Stan, she went to live on Phillip Island, Victoria, where Stan was a chicory farmer and later, when the market was no longer profitable for chicory, he became a builder. They had five children - Peter, Bill, Jill, Anne - who drowned when only three years old - and John. Stan and the boys all took an active part in the local Cricket Club and the Field and Rifle Club. For a few years Audrey turned their chicory kiln into a tourist attraction, showing tourists and school children how chicory was grown and then processed in the kiln. Well respected by the Island residents and loved by his family, Stan died suddenly of a heart attack on his 55th birthday. Audrey still lives, with John, in the house that Stan built when they were first married. Peter and Bill are partners in an electrical appliance shop on the Island and John is a joiner working for a firm in nearby San Remo. Jill became a nursing sister and is now married and living in Gippsland. Always of a warm, outgoing disposition, Audrey takes an interest in gardening and in local organisations on the Island.
