Notes for biography | Leslie was the eldest of the Thorne family and was probably the tallest of all the brothers. He had a very cheerful disposition. He was a postman for many years. Mail was delivered to homes in those days either on foot or by bicycle. While riding down Bellerine St one day, his PMG (now Australia Post) bike collapsed and he suffered mild concussion and bruising. As a young man he was a member of the South Geelong Cricket Club and won a gold medal for "Best Fielding" in 1908-09 which is now in the possession of Albert Leslie Renshaw. He married Margaret (Maggie) Rosser who had worked as a cook at "Riviera" (now Holy Cross) Hospital, and for many prominent Geelong families. She could certainly cook beautifully. They lived in McKillop Street not far from George and Alice. The Geelong Gaol is also in this vicinity and a prisoner (Angus Murray) escaped one night and, while they were out, entered their house and took Uncle's best serge suit as a means of "entry" to civil life again. In order to use a suitcase, presumably to put his prison clothes in, he took one from under the bed removing from it a quantity of eggs without breaking any of them. (Why were eggs in a suitcase under the bed!) However, he was soon captured and the suit returned to Leslie again. He trained in Egypt in the Camel Corps for service in the AIF during the First world War. [2] | |
